The EV500 isn’t misunderstood. She’s not hiding anything. She’s a cheap, small, no-effort shadow mask that exists to display spreadsheets, maybe 3d pinball and nothing more. Yes, it's tiny. The kind of small where you almost feel bad judging her too hard. Almost.
You don’t bring this home like a score. You bring it home like “eh, throw it in the pile, let’s see what happens.” Nasty yellowing on top, big old crack in the shell… she is what she is and i love her! She does 1024×768 at 75Hz which is OK for this era. That matters. All it takes is 60hz for me to chuck it in the trash. You can actually sit in front of it at 75hz without your eyes getting cooked. It makes her usable. It does not make her sharp….. You’re still looking at a soft, budget shadow mask. But at least it’s stable and somewhat comfortable.
Geometry is ok… Brightness is decent. Tube’s still got life. Color is where you feel the cost cutting. Everything is there, but it’s thin. Sharpness is butt. This is not that beautiful shadow mask softness you like where text looks like ink on paper. This is just soft because it’s cheap. She is just small, adorable, no tricks, no fake processing, no pretending to be something she is not. VGA in, picture out, done. Where she sits is bottom tier but usable. Not garbage enough to throw away, not good enough to ever recommend unless someone specifically needs a cheap beater.
This is the kind of CRT that made people switch to LCDs without looking back.
And at the same time… it’s exactly the kind of CRT that makes you appreciate the good ones.
