Emerson EWF2004

2004.

This Emerson EWF2004 is not a prestige tube. She is not rare. Actually from what I can tell she is QUITE common. She is a basic Funai-built 20 inch consumer CRT with front composite, rear RF and S-Video, and just enough personality to get the job done.

Every now and then, one of these budget plastic boxes shows off a 240p test image that actually looks surprisingly good. If I wasn't a psychopath I would probably settle for this CRT as a “retro gaming TV” but…. Look at my website. This one has the usual late-era consumer look. Big gray shell, front AV jacks, simple controls, no luxury anywhere. She feels like a TV that spent her life in a bedroom, basement, or kid’s room. Nothing about her screams premium. Nothing about her says collector bait. She just WORKS.

But the picture is better than you’d expect from this chassis.

Through composite, colors come in strong. Blues and reds hit hard, greens have that classic consumer TV punch, and 240p games look properly crunchy in that wonderful composite way. SNES pops like crazy on her. Anime looks bright and watchable. The Test Suite shows she is not perfect, but she is absolutely usable. Geometry is decent for what she is, with some edge wonk and normal consumer behavior, but nothing that ruins the experience. She is not fancy. She is not important. BUT she gets the job done.

Budget acceptable. 5.9
